Society for the Preservation of Downtown Los Angeles

Society for the Preservation of Downtown Los Angeles, also known as SP-DTLA, is a 501(c)(3) organization (pending) that advocates responsible and respectful development around and among Downtown Los Angeles' cherished historic structures. SP-DTLA supports development that accentuates and enhances the dozens of designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments in Downtown Los Angeles, especially those in the Historic Core.〔Curbed Los Angeles. (New Downtown LA Tower Would Block Views of Historic Eastern Columbia Clock )〕〔Los Angeles Times. (Saving the View )〕
Historic Downtown Los Angeles has undergone tremendous revitalization following the passage of the 1999 Adaptive Re-Use Ordinance〔Los Angeles Department of City Planning - Office of Historic Resources. (Adaptive Reuse Ordinance )〕 and Coucilmember Jose Huizar's "Bringing Back Broadway" initiative.〔(Bringing Back Broadway )〕 SP-DTLA seeks to spark change in urban planning to enact viewshed protection〔() National Trust for Historic Preservation - APPROACHES TO VIEWSHED PROTECTI0N

SP-DTLA endeavors to supplement the efforts being undertaken by the Los Angeles Conservancy〔(Los Angeles Conservancy )〕 and other preservation organizations.〔(The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation )〕 SP-DTLA strives to work with local government, such as Coucilmember Jose Huizar, who is "a preservationist at heart."〔LA Weekly. (Sixth Street Bridge Design Is Way Cool )〕
SP-DTLA gives great importance to protecting, enhancing and promoting the part of downtown that's the ''Birthplace of Hollywood and The Movie Industry''. The seven by four block area (3rd to Olympic Streets and Hill to Main Streets), which includes the Broadway Theater District, is home to one of the first movies ever made (Thomas Edison, 1898), possibly the first movie house ever built (Tally's Phonograph and Vitascope Parlor, 1896),〔(Tally's Phonograph & Vitascope Parlor )〕 Grauman's first theatre (Million Dollar Theater, 1918) and followed by the other movie studio's including: United Artists, Warner Bros., MGM, RKO.... Before the movie theaters there were the Vaudeville theaters on Broadway such as the Orpheum and Palace Theaters which started the careers of Bob Hope, Judy Garland, The Marx Bros, Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, Charlie Chaplin... The original Nickleodeons played short movies for a nickle, and these played at the Rialto in 1917 and Cameo Theatres in 1918. The Tower Theatre played the first talkie "The Jazz Singer". This area currently has more historic theatre palaces than any other place in the world.
==Mission Statement==
The Society for the Preservation of Downtown Los Angeles is dedicated to enforcing the highest standards in architecture and urban planning, inspiring best practices to serve the overall public good, promoting green space, and preserving physical and visual access to historic districts and landmarks. As this community of residents, business owners and visitors continues to blossom, our organization strives to preserve the unique and protected architectural gems of Downtown Los Angeles, define a zone of respect for its iconic buildings and landmarks, promote sensible urban planning, and to protect its exceptional culture and history. We call for a thoughtful balance between the past and the present, between the iconic buildings of yesterday and the bold hi-rises of tomorrow. We welcome the kind of development that brings density and prosperity to downtown Los Angeles, while preserving the integrity of its historic landscape.〔(SP-DTLA Mission Statement )〕
